Accounts

Guides

Accounts are where your money sits, where it comes from and where it goes. Here's how to add them, set them up and bring in what's already in them.

Every account has one of five types: Assets, Liabilities, Expenses, Income and Equity. Your bank accounts and cash are assets, your credit cards and loans are liabilities, and every expense account is a budget category. The five account types explains what belongs where. All amounts are in the journal’s currency: each journal has its own, and its accounts can’t have another. Journal currency

In the journal, tap Edit next to Accounts. The Accounts page lists the five types, each with the number of accounts it has.

  1. Open a type and tap + Add account at the end of its list.
  2. Or tap + Add Account in the bottom bar and pick the type from the menu.

Either way, the account’s details open next. To change an account later, tap it on this page.

  1. Name: how the account appears everywhere. You can’t save without one.
  2. Emoji: optional. It appears in the account’s round badge in lists. Expense accounts with an emoji also get a ring in the overview’s Budget section.
  3. Type: shown here, but fixed. It’s set by where you added the account and can’t be changed later.
  4. Parent Group, for expense accounts only: type a group name, such as “Home”. Categories with the same group appear together in a folder, in the overview and in the budget editor. Clear the field to take an account out of its group.
  5. The color of the account’s badge and of its bars in charts. Each type starts with its own color.

Tap Save (✓) when you’re done.

If you gave an account the wrong type, create a new one with the right type and record new transactions there.

An account that already holds money, or already has debt, needs an opening balance. Record it as a transaction from an Equity account such as “Opening balances”, and turn on Cleared:

Opening balance · Checking
Assets:Checking
+1,200.00
Equity:Opening balances
−1,200.00
Balanced
0.00 ✓

Opening balances in your asset accounts count as money you can budget. Your first ten minutes walks through it step by step.

A credit card is a Liabilities account: it shows what you owe. If the card already has a balance, record that debt as the card’s opening balance:

Opening balance · Credit card
Liabilities:Credit Card
−350.00
Equity:Opening balances
+350.00
Balanced
0.00 ✓

The minus means you owe €350. Paying with the card and paying it off are covered in Credit cards.

Assets and Liabilities accounts have one more section, Receipt Matching. It tells receipt scanning which account paid:

  • Tap Add Card and type the Last 4 digits of a card, as printed on receipts. Add one line per card that pays from this account, for example yours and your partner’s. Swipe left on a line to remove it.
  • Turn on Cash Account for the account you pay cash from, such as your wallet. Only one account can be the cash account. If another account already is, Balanced asks before it switches, and you confirm with Use for Cash.

More in Scanning receipts.

In the journal overview, the Accounts section lists your accounts by type:

  • Next to Assets and Liabilities accounts you see the balance as of today, in red when it’s below zero. If some transactions aren’t cleared yet, the cleared balance appears underneath.
  • Next to Expenses accounts you see how much of the category’s budget is still available, in color. Planned spending explains the colors.

Tap an account to see its transactions. Touch and hold it for two shortcuts: Show transactions and Create transaction, which opens a new transaction with this account already filled in. For Assets and Liabilities accounts, a chart of the balance sits above the transactions.

You can’t delete or archive an account yet. An account you no longer use stays in the list.
