Journal currency
Guides
Every journal has its own currency. Keep your household in euros and a trip to Prague in koruna, each in its own journal.
The currency belongs to the journal, and all of the journal’s amounts are in it. A shared journal has the same currency for everyone.
Choose the currency of a new journal
Section titled “Choose the currency of a new journal”A new journal starts with your device’s currency, set by your region. If your region has no currency of its own, or one Balanced doesn’t offer, it starts with euros.
- Tap + New Journal and type a Name.
- Below the name, Currency shows the currency’s name and code, such as “Czech Koruna (CZK)”. Tap it to choose another one.
- The list shows each currency’s name and code: your device’s currency first, then the others by name. Type in Search Currencies to find one by name or code, such as “CZK”.
- Tap the currency. Balanced takes you back to the new journal; tap Save (✓).
Change it later
Section titled “Change it later”- The journal’s name. You can rename the journal here too.
- The currency. Tap it to choose another one from the same list as for a new journal.
Open the journal, tap ⋯ More at the top and then Journal Settings. Change the name or the currency and tap Save (✓). In a shared journal, everyone can change the name and the currency, not just the owner; the change shows up on everyone’s devices.
Amounts aren’t converted
Section titled “Amounts aren’t converted”Changing the currency only changes the label. The numbers stay: €100 becomes 100 koruna, not 2,500. As soon as you pick another currency in Journal Settings, the note Amounts aren't converted. below it reminds you.
So change the currency to correct a wrong choice, ideally before you’ve entered much. Balanced has no exchange rates.
Currencies without cents
Section titled “Currencies without cents”Some currencies have no decimal places, such as the Japanese yen, the Korean won or the Hungarian forint. In a journal with one of them, you enter and see whole amounts only, such as ¥1,235, and the keypad has no decimal key.
If you switch a journal with cents to such a currency, its amounts are shown rounded. They stay exact until you edit one; then it’s rounded to a whole amount.
Currencies with three decimal places, such as the Kuwaiti dinar, aren’t offered.
One currency per journal
Section titled “One currency per journal”A journal has exactly one currency. You can’t give single accounts another currency or mix currencies in one journal. For a trip in another currency, create a journal of its own.
Older versions of Balanced show every journal in euros. In a shared journal, everyone should update.
