Colors and status

Reference

Every color and mark in Balanced, and what it tells you.

Balanced uses a few colors consistently: red for overspent or below zero, orange for a warning, green for money that’s there. Here are all of them, screen by screen.

  1. Ready to assign with an orange icon: money without a category. When you’ve assigned too much, it reads Overassigned, with a red icon and a red amount.
  2. A balance in red is below zero. For a credit card or loan, that’s normal: it’s what you owe.
  3. Expense accounts show what’s still available in green, orange, red or gray.
  4. A dot in front of the note: not cleared yet. It’s blue, or green in dark mode.
  5. A dimmed row is dated in the future. ↻ means it repeats.
Mark Meaning
Red amount Expense
Green amount Income
Uncolored amount Transfer
●before the note Not cleared yet

Expense accounts in the Accounts section show what’s available in a category, after planned spending:

Color Meaning
Green Money available
Orange Planned spending is more than what’s left
Red Overspent
Gray Nothing left over

A ring shows a category with an Emoji. It’s drawn in the account’s color, or red when the category is overspent. The amount under it is red when the category is overspent, orange when planned spending is more than what’s left, and otherwise in the normal text color.

At the top, a colored dot marks each number: green for Available, gray for Spent and yellow for Planned spending. At the bottom, To assign shows what’s left, or Overassigned in red.

Each category and liability has an amount tag in the same four colors as above, and a bar:

Bar Meaning
Gray Spent
Yellow Planned
Green Still available
Red Overspent

An overspent category also gets a red Overspent label. The rules behind the colors: Planned spending and Budget formulas.
